The Peabody Hotel Duck March

A Memphis tradition for nearly 90 years, the Peabody Ducks have been charming visitors from around the world with their daily march to the lobby fountain at the historic Peabody Hotel. The tradition began in the 1930s when the hotel’s General Manager, Frank Schutt, and a friend placed three live duck decoys in the fountain as a playful joke after a hunting trip. Guests loved the sight so much that a beloved tradition was born. In 1940, former circus animal trainer and Peabody Bellman Edward Pembroke began leading the ducks to the fountain and created their now-famous “Duck March.” He served as the hotel’s first Duckmaster for 50 years, helping turn this quirky moment into one of Memphis’ most iconic attractions. Today, guests can still gather in the grand lobby to watch the Peabody Ducks make their daily journey to and from the fountain
