Phoenix

The settlement that would become Phoenix was established on the banks of the Salt River in the early 1860s. According to legend, the city's name was inspired by one of its first settlers, Cambridge-educated pioneer Darrell Duppa. Duppa predicted that a great city would emerge from the ancient Hohokam ruins, akin to the mythical phoenix bird rising from its own ashes. Arizona is also home to 22 sovereign American Indian tribes, each with its own rich heritage and cultural contributions.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross, sitting high atop the red rocks in Sedona, Arizona, was inspired and commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude. It is a place of great beauty and peace. Built to a twin pinnacled spur, about 250 feet high, jutting out a thousand foot rock wall, “solid as the rock of Peter” the building of the Chapel was completed in April, 1956.
