The Mount, designed and built by Edith Wharton, is a quintessential example of American Renaissance architecture, based on principles from her 1897 book, The Decoration of Houses. This classical revival estate, with its meticulously designed formal gardens, offers a rare glimpse into Wharton's architectural and landscape theories.
As one of the few National Historic Landmarks dedicated to women, The Mount holds a special place in history. Guided tours explore its rich past, from construction to restoration, while delving into Wharton's life, achievements, and literary contributions. The house features three floors of beautifully preserved formal and private rooms, including Wharton's library, her restored bedroom suite, and the old kitchen.
The Mount is fully accessible with elevators to all floors, though the gardens offer partial accessibility.
