The crater’s nearly perfect symmetry is broken only by a western breach, where basaltic lava once flowed across 24 square miles, forming lava lakes, collapsed lava tubes and sinks, spatter cones, and expansive basalt fields. This unique desert landscape offers a dramatic glimpse into Earth’s volcanic past, and temperatures can get very hot. Visitors should come prepared and pack plenty of water.
