Many of Tunisia's imports arrive at La Goulette, and so will you! Once a popular Tunisian vacation destination, La Goulette's seaside vibe earned it the nickname "Little Sicily." Today the historic kasbah shouldn't be overlooked, and the beaches are still beautiful, but La Goulette is also your gateway to Tunis, Tunisia's can't-miss capital and largest city. A metropolis of nearly three million, Tunis features many sights and sounds that haven't changed much in ages, and Jamaa ez-Zitouna in the Old Town might just be Exhibit A. This street is home to traditional street markets, or souks, full of small stalls offering handmade products. The narrow streets of the old-town Medina section hold more cultural and historical treasures mosques, palaces and such to discover. But another option for spending your time would be exploring the Roman ruins of Carthage, and over in that direction is also Sidi Bou Said, perhaps the opposite. This literal city on a hill well, it's really more of a town is the very picture of seaside Mediterranean perfection, with whitewashed walls and blue accents under the sun.
Palermo is a cultural feast, a fascinating combination of East and West that is unlike any other European city on the Mediterranean. A simple stroll can serve to illustrate Palermo's rich heritage. The Quattro Canti is the great square at the heart of the city. A short walk past its 17th-century palazzos and fountains brings the traveler to the Palazzo dei Normanni, where elaborate tile work and mosaics showcase Islamic and Byzantine influences. The city abounds in such colorful sights, from the neo-classical Teatro Massimo one of the largest opera houses in Europe to the catacombs beneath the Capuchin convent, where thousands of mummified bodies lie in eternal rest.
Not just one of Italys oldest cities, but among the worlds oldest, Naples and its surrounding area has over thousands of years contributed innovations to not only the culinary and visual arts, but the development of everything from language to music. Today, you'll feel the friendly spirit of this sunny metropolis as you sample its historic sights, fabulous shopping galleria and irresistible cuisine. But dont limit yourself to the city itself Mount Vesuvius, the spectacular Amalfi Coast, and the romantic isle of Capri's famous Blue Grotto are all just a short distance away. The well-known, buried city of Pompeii is an archeological wonder, and not far from Naples.
Ajaccio has a historical fact to get out of the way before we proceed, and its not a small one. This is the town where Napoleon was born you know, the legendary French emperor? Visit the city, the capital of the island of Corsica, and walk in his footsteps as you explore what they call The Scented Isle. If youre wondering why they would do that, you only need to get a bit outside of the city and find le maquis, an aromatic bush thats native to the island and easy to spot thanks to its cool shade of purple. But theres plenty to see in back in local civilization, like the Roman Catholic Cathedral from the 16th Century, Maison Bonaparte (Napoleons birthplace) and an amazing collection of art at the Fesch Museum.
Marseille is Frances second largest city, its largest port on the Mediterranean and thanks in large part to Algerian immigration in the 1950s a melting pot of people and cultures. Marseilles also a place of striking contrasts: at the picturesque Vieux Port, not far from the iconic fishing boats are sleek pleasure craft. Dominating the harbor is the infamous Chateau dIf, the rocky prison from which Dumas Count of Monte Cristo escaped. Marseille is also your gateway to Provence. Explore the countryside around Arles and Avignon, as immortalized by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso.
