Historic Smithfield is a pre-Revolutionary plantation house built in 1774 by Colonel William Preston, located on the edge of the Virginia Tech campus. It sits at the crossroads of Colonial America, westward expansion, African slavery, and conflicts between indigenous peoples and European settlers connecting figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Lewis & Clark with the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the founding of Virginia Tech. It is one of the earliest and largest estates west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The house tour features period-furnished rooms with 18th and 19th century decorative arts, portraits, and artifacts. The grounds include a demonstration kitchen garden, an heirloom orchard, a historic dwelling for enslaved people, and beautiful open landscapes. Blacksmith demonstrations at an active forge are offered during special events.

Mountain Lake Lodge: Accommodations do not have air conditioning to preserve the historic integrity of the building. At the elevation of the lodge, Mother Nature provides natural air conditioning with cool mountain breezes. The rooms are also TV-free. The lodge has 3 floors and no elevators; accordingly, this trip will require you to climb up/down stairs. Each room has 1 or 2 queen beds.
At Smithfield, a minimum of 15 steps are required to enter/exit.
Every Starr trip includes deluxe round-trip motorcoach transportation from one or more of our departure locations.
A Starr Tour Director will accompany you on this trip.
Baggage handling at hotels is included.
This tour is not a fit for those who cannot ascend/descend stairs.
