Washington Irving's Sunnyside

Explore the charming rooms of Irving’s picturesque cottage, where history and storytelling come together, then wander the beautiful gardens and grounds overlooking the Hudson River. Hear fascinating stories about Irving, his home, and the landscapes and legends that inspired America’s most famous spooky tales.

 

Lyndhurst Mansion

Lyndhurst Mansion, perched above the Hudson River, is one of America's finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture, originally built in the 1830s for William Paulding, Mayor of New York City. The mansion boasts an impressive collection of Victorian decorative arts, set amidst beautifully landscaped grounds. Visitors can also explore the Museum Shop located at the Welcome Center, in the former Carriage House building. Originally used as a tack room for saddles, harnesses, and other horse equipment, this space has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind shopping experience.

Dark Shadows returns to Lyndhurst Mansion for its 60th Anniversary Halloween celebration! Your admission will include a Meet & Greet with Kathryn Leigh Scott, author and actress, best known for playing “Maggie Evans” and “Josette DuPres” in the original television series and the movie House of Dark Shadows. The Carriage Room in the Welcome Center will have House of Dark Shadows playing throughout the day.

 

Meal Information:

 

Lunch is included at Lyndhurst Mansion. Choices are:

• Paris Tartine sandwich: turkey, Brie cheese, and fig on whole wheat bread

• American Combo sandwich: roast beef, turkey, ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and dressing

• Chicken Salad sandwich: served on cranberry walnut bread

• Tuna sandwich: served on wheat bread.

• Cosmo sandwich: grilled eggplant, fresh mozzarella, arugula, roasted red peppers, and pesto

• Vegetarian sandwich: Portobello mushroom, baby spinach, roasted red peppers, and provolone

Lunch includes pasta salad, a chocolate chip cookie for dessert, and a bottle of water.

Need to Know:

• Every Starr trip includes deluxe round-trip motorcoach transportation from one or more of our departure locations.

• A Starr Tour Director will accompany you on this trip.

 

Accessibility:

• Sunnyside: There is short uphill walk between the parking lot and the Vistor's Center and the Cottage. The tour visits two floors of the cottage reaching the second floor requires climbing narrow steps, there is no elevator access. Walking shoes are highly recommended.

  Lyndhurst Mansion: There is a short uphill walk between the Welcome Center and the mansion. The tour visits two floors of the mansion; reaching the second floor requires climbing 26 steps; there is no elevator access; only the mansion’s ground floor is fully accessible. An alternative experience to view rooms on the second floor of the mansion is available. An ADA-accessible pathway can be visited in the lower landscape, offering majestic views of the Hudson River.  ADA bathrooms are available at our Welcome Center and in the Bowling Alley.
