In 1874, President Rutherford B. Hayes allocated $15,000 to construct a lighthouse on this distinctive "nub" of land. By July 1, 1879, the construction was completed, and the lighthouse, originally known as Knubble Lighthouse, began guiding mariners.
Later, to honor its historical significance, Nubble Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
The Old York Historical Society is home to one of the earliest English settlements in America. Begin your visit at the Museum Center, where you'll receive a warm welcome and an insightful overview of the area's rich history. Then, enjoy a guided tour of the Old Gaol, a National Historic Landmark and the site of the first prison, built in 1656.

Nestled in the picturesque Fort Williams Park along Maine's classic rocky coastline, Portland Head Light is the state's oldest lighthouse, dating back to 1791. Known for its stunning beauty, it is also one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States.
Bug Light Park offers stunning, expansive views of Portland Harbor and the skyline of Maine's largest city. The park is home to the historic Portland Breakwater Lighthouse and the Liberty Ship Memorial. Built in 1875, the Portland Breakwater Lighthouse is considered one of Maines most elegant lighthouses. While inspired by an ancient Greek monument, it was constructed with cast iron plates. Its small size earned it the nickname "Bug Light."
Located in Bug Light Park, the Liberty Ship Memorial is an outdoor sculpture featuring dioramas that commemorate the Liberty Ships built at this site during World War II. This memorial honors the vital role these ships played in the war effort.
The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is home to the finest collection of Maine minerals and gems, showcasing one of the worlds premier collections of extraterrestrial rocks. Among its impressive displays are meteorites from Mars, the Moon, and the Asteroid Belt, offering fascinating insights into the origins of our Solar System. Notably, the museum features the five largest pieces of Moon rock on Earth.
